Final Illustration for Dancer Article

Image
This is how my final illustration ended up, I am pleased with the outcome because I feel that I have showed the main points in the article through my illustration, for example, and I quote 'sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, back problems, neck problems and shoulder problems' this made me think about how I could show these problems through my work. I decided to take those quotes and create something that could clearly show it without making the illustration seem too graphic, as with previous thumbnails I did think they were a little graphic which is why I decided to not take them forward. I made her limbs curl around the way they have because I wanted to show how much effort it takes to be a dancer, I also wanted the image to flow well. I wanted to stick with the theme of complimentary colours to make the image more dramatic, I chose these particular colours to show that the dancer represents an emotion of sadness, I felt the best way to show this was to use cold...

My 2 briefed articles for Editorial Illustration from my Art Director

Image
We were asked to create an editorial illustration by the guidance of a friend, the brief given was fast paced and really kept me on my toes. The chosen friend was asked to find an article that best suited our work but was also challenging for us in the sense that it would allow use to engage with a wide range of new idea-generating strategies. The chosen article given to me was from the 'New York Times', it was about Caribou's disappearing and them being endangered. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/science/endangered-caribou-idaho-british-columbia.html?_r=0 After taking some notes, and a short group discussion my Art Director decided to change the article, not only because majority of the class had chosen wildlife. Although she decided to change my article I still did some thumbnails of ideas that maybe would've been my final illustration for my article. The idea for the illustrations above was to show that the Caribou are endangered by not only humans but by o...

Editorial Illustration planning for dancing article

Image
After having the second brief given to me, I decided to start mind mapping and pick out key quotes from the article that would be useful. Following the mind mapping I then began to sketch up some thumbnails, I created 3, the first thumbnail being a ballerina where you couldn't see her face, with cracked limbs, with black roses at her feet. Though my Art Director wanted me to keep it simple and use a limited colour palette I though using black paper and white lining the illustration would suit the brief more.  The second thumbnail was a ballerina, with her limbs wrapping around each other, the concept behind this was that in the article, and I quote that 'sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, back problems, neck problems, shoulder problems' (from Tommy Franzen) the goal here was to clearly get across that dancers go through a lot of problems and pain throughout their journey, to do this I wanted to stick to a colder colour palette. I also liked the idea of using co...

Being an Art Director

Image
We were asked to become an Art Director for a chosen work college, we were told that the brief was fast paced and would only be 2 weeks long.  After receiving the brief I thought that remembering some of her older drawings she did (using simple sketches, and mostly pencil) would make it easy to pick out an article, also asked her what article she would like to work with best. I assigned her an article about birds, the article was called 'Crows and Ravens Make New York Comebacks to Caw (and Cr-r-ruck) About' from the 'New York Times.' I gave her the article to look at with no instructions or brief. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/24/nyregion/crows-and-ravens-make-new-york-comebacks-to-caw-and-cr-r-uck-about.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FBirds&action=click&contentCollection=science&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=1 After a group discussion I had realised my mistake. My firs...

Briefed editorial Illustration for bird.

Image
Following a visit from a graduated student from Hereford College of Arts and a successful illustrator, Nicholas Stevenson, we were asked to create an illustration from a brief he gave us. The brief was to create an editorial illustration for the assigned article he had given us (the red-billed fire finch flying away with the feeling of a human's unhappiness.) The proportions were limited making it challenging for us to work with, it was important to keep to these proportions to make it work on the page. He wanted us to use a limited colour palette, so the main focus would be on the shape rather than the colour. My inspiration to use typography came from Jonny Hannah, he curves his words around the objects or thing he's illustrating, I decided to take that idea further and have the words shape the bird. I also like how he mostly uses a calligraphy font and thought i should stay with this theme of typography. These are the ideas I came up, I decided to keep the ty...
