Birthday Illustration

Image
After having projects, and other assignments through the holidays, I had a family members birthday (to be exact my mum.) I decided to take a break from doing other projects and focus on something sentimental, so I recreated one of her favourite quotes, as well as trying to do digital art. (Which I still need practise with.)

Summary of this module.

Throughout this module we've been given a variety of different projects to create Editorial Illustrations for. This module for me was challenging and really made me come out of my comfort, on the other hand this wasn't so bad as I learned new techniques and styles for my work in future. For our first project we were asked to create an illustration from the choosing of 3 different articles, my chosen article was about an argument between Earth and the Economy, my final illustration can be found in the link below. https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5597838232629992456#editor/target=post;postID=5637595657328368431;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=9;src=link The next project was to create an Illustration from an article given to us by our Art Director and Illustrator (Nicolas Stevenson.) The brief was to create an illustration to make people aware of birds carrying messages of expression. My final illustration can be found in the link below. htt...

Final Illustration for 'To Kill A Mockingbird'

Image
To end this project on book covers, I have created 2 book covers for 'Penguin Books' on ' To Kill A Mockingbird,' one is digitally done, and the other is hand-rendered, using inks, pens and paints. My first Illustrated book cover was a digital copy, using photoshop and the elects on the programme provided. The reason I used the 'dripped blood' was because while reading about the story and the court case, I thought about the year it was set (1960) so I wanted to keep the simplistic Black and White colours, to highlight the fact the movie as well as the book is more vintage than up to date. I created this piece in photoshop using the paint tool to drip the blood (background) down 3/4 of the page. I then thought about what would be my main Illustration on the front. At first I wanted the blood to drip from the mockingbird, but thought this would take away the main Illustration of the cover as the background is already dripping.  I then sketched up a rough dra...

New brief for 2 different books covers

Image
For our next brief we have been asked to do a book cover for the books given to us, it is our decision to do both or one, but our tutor clearly explained that he would like more than one final book cover. The 2 books given to us were ' How To Kill A Mockingbird ' and ' Adrian Mole .' (The links to both the books are below.) Before making my decision on which book cover I should create a front cover for, I chose to look into book covers. I did this by looking on pinterest, creating a board and filling them with creative, detailed and unique ideas.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Diary_of_Adrian_Mole,_Aged_13%C2%BE A few in particular stood out to me because of the concept of them and how they are shaped on the front of the book, for example, one book that I pinned had 2 swans on the front forming almost a ying-yang shape, I liked this idea because even though its simplistic it gives a good idea o...

Final Illustration for Dancer Article

Image
This is how my final illustration ended up, I am pleased with the outcome because I feel that I have showed the main points in the article through my illustration, for example, and I quote 'sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, back problems, neck problems and shoulder problems' this made me think about how I could show these problems through my work. I decided to take those quotes and create something that could clearly show it without making the illustration seem too graphic, as with previous thumbnails I did think they were a little graphic which is why I decided to not take them forward. I made her limbs curl around the way they have because I wanted to show how much effort it takes to be a dancer, I also wanted the image to flow well. I wanted to stick with the theme of complimentary colours to make the image more dramatic, I chose these particular colours to show that the dancer represents an emotion of sadness, I felt the best way to show this was to use cold...

My 2 briefed articles for Editorial Illustration from my Art Director

Image
We were asked to create an editorial illustration by the guidance of a friend, the brief given was fast paced and really kept me on my toes. The chosen friend was asked to find an article that best suited our work but was also challenging for us in the sense that it would allow use to engage with a wide range of new idea-generating strategies. The chosen article given to me was from the 'New York Times', it was about Caribou's disappearing and them being endangered. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/science/endangered-caribou-idaho-british-columbia.html?_r=0 After taking some notes, and a short group discussion my Art Director decided to change the article, not only because majority of the class had chosen wildlife. Although she decided to change my article I still did some thumbnails of ideas that maybe would've been my final illustration for my article. The idea for the illustrations above was to show that the Caribou are endangered by not only humans but by o...

Editorial Illustration planning for dancing article

Image
After having the second brief given to me, I decided to start mind mapping and pick out key quotes from the article that would be useful. Following the mind mapping I then began to sketch up some thumbnails, I created 3, the first thumbnail being a ballerina where you couldn't see her face, with cracked limbs, with black roses at her feet. Though my Art Director wanted me to keep it simple and use a limited colour palette I though using black paper and white lining the illustration would suit the brief more.  The second thumbnail was a ballerina, with her limbs wrapping around each other, the concept behind this was that in the article, and I quote that 'sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, back problems, neck problems, shoulder problems' (from Tommy Franzen) the goal here was to clearly get across that dancers go through a lot of problems and pain throughout their journey, to do this I wanted to stick to a colder colour palette. I also liked the idea of using co...
